Certified Internal Auditor

The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA®) designation places your skills and knowledge at the forefront and proves that you have a high level of technical expertise in internal auditing, including a thorough, global knowledge of operations that is an essential requirement for both executive management and members of the board of directors for accomplishing overall goals. 

Requirements

Education

Candidates must hold an Associate’s degree or higher

Experience

  • If you hold a Master’s Degree (or equivalent): 12 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent

    If you hold a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent): 24 months of internal auditing experience or its equivalent

    If you hold an Associate’s Degree, A-Level Certificate (or equivalent): 60 months of internal

Exam

  • Achieve a minimum score of 600 (out of 700) on the three-part exam administered by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA)

  • The IIA offers exams in many languages, get in touch to see which languages are currently available

Earn the Credential

  • Meet the education requirements

  • Pass the three-part exam

  • Submit a Character Reference Form signed by a CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CFSA, CRMA, or the candidate’s supervisor

  • Meet the experience requirements

  • Abide by the Code of Ethics established by The IIA
