CMA Exam Overview

To earn the CMA Certification, you need to pass two exam parts (Part I and Part II). Each exam part focuses on different topics.  Here is more about each exam part and related key topics.

Part 1

Financial Planning

Performance & Analytics

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Format: computer-based testing, 100 multiple choice questions and two 30-minute essay questions
  • Testing Windows:

    15% Internal Controls

Part 2

Strategic Financial
Management

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Format: computer-based testing, 100 multiple choice questions and two 30-minute essay questions

  • Topic Weights:
    10% Risk Management
    10% Investment Decisions
    15% Professional Ethics
    20% Financial Statement Analysis
    20% Corporate Finance
    25% Decision Analysis

Exam Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university

  • Or hold a professional certification. For a list of approved certifications, contact our team

  • If there is no Bachelor’s degree, professional certification or experience, you can sit for the exams and fulfill educational and experience requirements within 7 years of passing

Experience

  • Requires two years of experience in management accounting and/or financial management

  • This requirement may be completed prior to or within 7 years of passing the exam

  • Or continuous part-time positions of 20 hours per week*

     *At a rate of one year of experience for every two years of part-time employment

Exam

  • Achieve a minimum score of 360 (on a scale of 0 to 500) on the two-part exam administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

  • Be prepared to take the exams in English

Earn the Credential

  • Active membership in the Institute of Management Accountants

  • Pay the CMA Entrance Fee

  • Satisfy the Education Qualification

  • Satisfy the Experience Qualification

  • Complete all required examination parts

  • Comply with the IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice

Taking the examination involves three categories of required fees that are to be paid directly to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA):    
- Entrance Fees: $300
- IMA Membership Fees: $295 (Annually) 
 
- Exam Registration Fees (per exam): $495
